Victoria will ban plastic bags from November 1

June 19, 2019

The Victorian Government has set a date for their plastic bag ban, with retailers expected to phase plastic bags out by November.

Single-use, lightweight plastic shopping bags will be banned from Victoria from November 1, with Minister for Environment Lily D’Ambrosio stating this was a necessary plastic pollution protection for Victoria’s rivers, waterways, oceans and wildlife.

“Plastic pollution is a significant environmental problem – the actions we take now will help ensure Victoria has a clean and bright future,” said Minister D’Ambrosio.

Victoria’s legislation with include bags with a thickness of 35 microns or less, including bags made from degradable, biodegradable or compostable plastic.

Paper bags are a sustainable alternative – able to be reused or recycled.
